### What is the aim of the Year 3 & 4 Maths Programme?

**Objectives Include:**

- Getting Year 4 pupils ready to sit the 11+ exam (when they get to Year 6)
- Preparing Year 4 pupils to cope and even excel when they arrive in Year 5 at school
- Ensuring Year 5 pupils plug any gaps in their knowledge of Key Stage 2 Maths

**Topics include:**

- Place value revision and extension: vocabulary of estimation and approximation; round to 10,000; calculate temperature across 0 degrees centigrade
- Multiplication and division: express a quotient as a fraction or decimal; rounding; four operations to solve word problems using money and measures; conversation of pound to foreign currency; mental strategies; long and short multiplication
- Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion: relate fractions to division and decimals; express fractions as percentages; solve problems involving ratio and proportion
- Handling data: probabilities; problem solving by representing and interpreting data in tables, charts, graphs and diagrams; mode; range
- Puzzles and problem solving: generalise and predict
- Shape and space: reflective symmetry in regular polygons; translation
- Shape, space and measures: directions; plot co-ordinates, properties of shapes; use protractor; perimeters of rectangles and polygons
- Measures and problem solving: imperial units; timetables; find percentages
- Addition and subtraction: mental addition and subtraction using known number facts and place value; problem solving choosing appropriate number operation and calculation
- Properties of numbers and number sequences: predict outcome of sums and differences about odd or even numbers; find the factors of any number up to 100; explain formulae

### What is the aim of the Year 5 and 11+ Maths Programme?

##### Objectives Include:

- Getting Year 5 pupils ready to sit the 11+ exam (when they get to Year 6)
- Preparing Year 5 pupils to cope and even excel when they arrive in Year 6 at school
- Ensuring Year 6 pupils plug any gaps in their knowledge of Key Stage 2 Maths before they begin secondary school
- Preparing Year 6 pupils for Key Stage 2 SATs assessment
- Topics are suitable for up to Year 8 pupils

##### Topics include:

- Decimals, fractions and percentages: ordering and differences between positive and negative integers; order fractions by converting them fractions with common denominator; position on number line; convert fraction to decimal using division; find percentages of whole number quantities; multiply and divide decimals mentally by 10 or 100 and integers by 1000; order a mixed set of numbers with up to three decimal places; use a fraction as an operator to find fractions of numbers or quantities
- Calculations: Consolidate all mental calculation strategies from previous years; column addition and subtraction of numbers involving decimals; short division or multiplication of decimals; derive quickly division facts corresponding to tables up to 10 x 10; long multiplication involving three-digit by two digit integer; explain methods and reasoning
- Shape and space: 90 degree rotation about a vertice; recognize where a shape will be after reflection in two mirror lines at right angles read and plot co-ordinates in all four quadrants; calculate angles; identify different nets of a closed cube; translations
- Problem solving: in depth consolidation using past 11+ examination papers involving: decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion; tables, graphs, charts and diagrams; ‘real life’ or money; converting pounds to foreign currency or vice versa; VAT; generate formula using letters as symbols; decimals and percentage, etc.
- Ratio, proportion, data handling and problem solving: solve problems by representing, extracting and interpreting data in tables, graphs, charts and diagrams including those generated by a computer; frequency tables and bar charts with grouped discrete data
- Non-verbal reasoning, properties of numbers and reasoning about numbers including algebra: make general statements about odd or even numbers including the outcome of products; apply tests of divisibility; find common multiples; recognise prime numbers to at least 100; solve problems or puzzles, general and predict; develop from explaining a generalized relationship in words to expressing it in a formula using letters as symbols (eg, the cost of n articles at 15p each)
